This painting began as a preparatory exercise, built on a 3×3 compositional grid to study balance, proportion and the distribution of volumes ahead of a larger work. During the process, however, I came to recognize a completeness of its own in the small canvas: the delicacy of the colors, the care in the transparency of the glass and the harmony among the vases turn the work from a simple technical study into a finished painting.
The scene brings together everyday objects — vases, a decorated jug in Cézanne’s style, a cut flower — under a soft light that defines forms and materials with great sensitivity.
The dark background, which now dominates almost a third of the works I have painted so far, heightens the sense of intimacy, while the warm colors of the flowers and small containers create a subtle dialogue between presence and absence. It is a domestic scene that seems suspended in time, an invitation to notice the hidden beauty in the simple things around us.
It is a work that shows how study can become creation, and how beauty can emerge even in works born as trials.
